This fairytale castle of Egeskov, which is actually more than 450 years old, is located in a picturesque rural area of the Funen island.

Its construction was completed in 1554. It was a difficult period for Denmark: there were riots here and there. For this reason landowners built powerful castles that were difficult to invade. Egeskov castle (Danish: Egeskov Slot) stands on the oaken piles in the middle of the lake. It is believed that for building the foundation more than a thousand of trees (a whole forest!) had been cut down. Hence is the name Egeskov, which means oak forest in Danish.

The castle was built for defense. It consists of two long buildings connected by a thick double wall. The idea was that in case the attackers managed to invade first building, the defense would be continued in the second one. The second wall is so massive that it even has a place for passage to the hidden staircase and the well, which provided an access to water in case of a siege. In the outer wall there are embrasures, which allowed defenders to attack their enemies with boiling tar or water. Originally, the only access to the castle was by means of a drawbridge.

But even the available rooms are extremely interesting! Impressive Hunting Room contains not only trophies brought back from British East Africa, but also weapons. The Banqueting Hall can be rented for exclusive events. It looks the way it was restored in 1975. In this hall there is a portrait of King Christian IV riding a horse. Visitors can also see the Rigborg Room. Here the daughter of the owner was kept in isolation for five years.

In the former shed there’s a museum of vintage cars. The whole history of transport — from horse-drawn carriages and steam cars, to modern cars — is displayed here. There are also museums of flying machines, agricultural machinery, dolls and clockwork toys.

About 100 years ago a unique dolls’ house was built for the owner’s daughter. It displays amazing interiors with real furniture. Now it stands in Rigborg Room and is called Titania’s Palace. It took father 15 years to complete the task!

The Loft is another very interesting place. Here you will find old toys, vintage kitchen equipment and a collection of porcelain and pottery. Also here lies a legendary wooden man. It is said that if he is moved from his position on the cushion, Egeskov will sink into the moat on Christmas Eve.
