What Croatia is famous for: 8 reasons to discover this Balkan country


If you are interested in budget travel, then you have probably heard that Croatia is advised to be one of the first to visit. Here you will have a beach vacation, famous historic places and natural beauty! The fact that holidays in Croatia are relatively inexpensive compared to more promoted European countries is far from the only reason to visit it. We have collected at least eight more reasons and today we will tell you what Croatia is famous for:

1. Croatia is the museum of Nature!

About 70% of the country is occupied by incredibly beautiful national parks of. The most famous national park in Croatia is Plitvice Lakes. It is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List and consists of more than a hundred of lakes and waterfalls! If you go on a trip to Croatia, be sure to plan at least a day for a walk in the park.

2. The colorful coast of the Adriatic Sea

Croatia’s beaches are among the top three cleanest beaches in Europe. The water here is pure, there have never been any industrial buildings near it. Throughout its existence, it has always been a prestigious resort, the purity of which was carefully protected. And not far from the coast more than a thousand islands can be found. From large to small and uninhabited, you can visit all of them!

3. Dinaric Alps

Better than the sea can only be the sea, which is located at the foot of some of the most beautiful mountains. So if you get tired of just basking on the beaches, you can go on an active vacation and explore rocks, lakes, caves, mountain rivers and other beauties.

4. Croatian cuisine

No doubt, many countries can be proud of their culinary heritage. For example, very close to Croatia there’s Italy, and the cuisine of latter is considered one of the best in the world. But if you take into account the fact that due to its proximity, Croatian cuisine is similar to Italian, and prices are often lower, then you should pay attention to this point.

Always fresh delicacies straight from the sea: squid, shrimp, fish, risotto (which is no worse than in Italy!) and delicate sheep cheese – lovers of Mediterranean cuisine will definitely like it here!

5. Delicious wine

Winemaking is another property of Croatia, which in this matter puts it on a par with the leading European countries. The climate here is conducive to the active development of the wine business, which the locals have been doing for over 2500 years! This country is especially famous for its white wines, but there are also red and pink ones. So if you have ever dreamt of going on a tour of the vineyards and taste some wines, then in Croatia you will have such an opportunity too.

6. Ancient towns

Despite the fact that most of the country is natural parks, lakes, coastlines and other green corners, Croatia will also be interesting for its towns with a very interesting original architecture. The most famous towns worth visiting are Dubrovnik, Opatija and Split, but this is only the very top of the list and there are enough of them to arrange a full tour. Dubrovnik, by the way, is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List as one of the most beautiful towns of the Renaissance.

7. Did you know that the legendary Game of Thrones was filmed in Croatia?

The city of Dubrovnik, which was mentioned in the previous paragraph, became the filming location for the series “Game of Thrones”: it was the King’s Landing! This, of course, added to the country an additional considerable flow of tourists. Even the prices, in this particular city, are slightly higher than in the rest of Croatia. But if you are also passionate about the history of the series, a visit to Dubrovnik is worth it.

8. Museum of Broken Relationships in Zagreb

It is worth noting a museum, which is remembered by everyone for its originality. It is the Museum of Broken Relationships, found in the capital of Croatia. It exhibits a collection of things from different people that were brought here after the relationship ended. Here you can find out their stories, a reminder of the past and the lost love. A bit of a sad idea, but still very interesting and romantic.

What Croatia is famous for: 9. Ancient castles

Croatia’s castles take a special place among the attractions of this Balkan country. They are quite distinctive and differ from the usual medieval outposts in Europe. But this is their charm, especially since there are a lot of ancient structures here!
