Long time ago, in a small Polish village called Zalipie, someone drew a flower on the ceiling to hide a soot stain. Ventilation was quite bad those days, and soot stains were common in most houses. Residents of the village liked that painting on the ceiling and thus started to hide the soot in their houses under the bright painted flowers.

Finally, all the houses in the village were covered with flowers, including barns, wells, churches and bridges!

Since 1948, in Zalipie the competition called “Malowana Khata” (painted house) is being held. Initially, it was a part of activity aimed to help Polish people to recover from the atrocities of WWII.
